Betty White is probably right

Did you see SNL this weekend with Betty White?  It was a good episode if you ask me.  She was energetic and quick witted.  White is definitely not afraid to push boundaries when it comes to humor.

Her monologue was funny too, she cracked jokes about her age but spent a good amount of time talking about the Facebook campaign to get her on the show.  She was happy for the opportunity but then turned around and ripped Facebook as a waste of time.  She riffed about seeing people's vacation pictures used to be considered torture and joked that to stay in touch with her friends takes a Ouija board.

Last week I de-activated my personal Facebook account (though I still contribute to the KSBYNEWS fan page).  I definitely looked at it more than I should and I wondered exactly what I was getting out of it.  There is an expectation that goes along with Facebook now, "Did you get that event invite, are you going to friend this person or that, why did this person say this or that?"

I have in this blog said that Facebook will probably end e-mail as we know it since Facebook pages rarely change while e-mail addresses do.  However I am going to revise that.  I still think that is true for some people, however I think some push-back is possible with Facebook.  It is overly interactive and can be distracting.  There are not enough controls, it is like drinking from a firehose while using it at the same time.

OK, now I will fully admit it is probably up to the user to just use it less.  However that is easier than it sounds.

Now with Facebook there is a big difference between deactivating it, and deleting it.  I deactivated it which means I can turn it back on by just logging in.  Facebook doesn't want you to quit for obvious business reasons.  I can see reasons I might need it to contact someone.

I thought I had better blog about it in case someone was offended, thinking I had deleted or targeted them by deactivating.  I like by blog site better, anyone can read and respond but I control what I want showing.  And if you have a comment the whole world doesn't have to see it.  Sometimes a din of voices is not a good thing, other times it is.

Those voices got Betty White the show of a lifetime, and it was worth it.  I just don't need to know that another sandwich is being served at Cafe World.

I ALMOST ENTIRELY agree with you, Dave. FB IS a waste of time, 'til you (ok, I) learn to wean myself of any games or distractions. It's been GREAT for getting in touch with LOOOOONG lost friends (three in particular) that I'd been unable to find by ANY other means (short of private investigator) until FB came around. (Darn those married names!) I think about dropping my FB time, but for now, I'm just learning to (kind of) control myself, thereby freeing myself up for my previous TimeSuck - the blogosphere.
